In 2011 I described a project related to Northstar System Monitor 1.5, and to boot CP/M or anything using a Northstar disk controller.

Today I got a new ePROM reader / burner from "kris at mygeekhobby.com", who builds/sells Matt Millan's design.

In a matter of minutes I was up and going. I started with my unknown 2708s. Until I got this reader I had to fire up my IMSAI 8080 to read the ROMS that way. A newly-constructed Arduino-made-eProm burner is a lu">... [ read more ]

IBM 1401 Core Memory Planeby billdeg Total messages in this thread: 1 ![]() A single core memory plane from an IBM 1401. Click image for larger view.
This memory plane was on display at the Kennett Classic computer museum but the frame broke in three places. With care, the frame and wires were reassembled as you see here, by using strong clamps and superglue.
From page 9 of the IBM 140 Data Processing System Reference Manual:
"... The IBM 1401 Data Processing System uses maganetic-core storage for storing instructions and data (Figures 10 and 11). All data in core storage is instantly available, and the specical design of the core-storage unit makes each position individually addressable. This means an instructrion can designate the exact storage locations that contain the datta needed">... [ read more ]

1996 Time Capsule Pentium 1by billdeg Total messages in this thread: 1 ![]() On the right is an Alpha (local company in the Phila Area or a computer show vendor) Pentium I. On the left is the screen output from the computer. You might be able to pick out the specs. Windows 95 OS. (Ignore the AT&T 6300 in the middle)
The computer's file dates and software range from February 1996 through to the end of 1996 and then mysteriously this computer was never apparently used again.
Beautiful shape, a total time capsule from 1996. Rare Pentium 60 (I believe) that would have been the best "generic PC show" processor available in early 1996. I had just 4 months earlier also bought a Pentium 60 for myself. Pentium was total cutting edge then and I remember the purchase broke my bank account.
PC shows were still popular in the mid">... [ read more ]

Cramer Intel 8080A Microcomputerby billdeg Total messages in this thread: 2 Updated: [ Additional Details 8080 CramerKit ] 04/17/2025 ![]()
Cramer Electronics Incorporated started advertising this 8080 kit microcomputer, the "Cramerkit", in late 1975 for $495 (or was it $1495?) but none were delivered until the spring of 1976. The Cramerkit was a designed by Microcomputer Technique Inc. and was shipped partially assembled. Click image for larger view.
I managed to find a partial view of the product advertising, from Electronics magazine April 1976. According to the advertisement, the assembly of the kit takes minutes, meaning the wirewrapping and sockets are done at the factory. Download

This is the rack model acquired in late fall 2022. The system can run the "chase the lights" program indicating a minimum CPU function. Powering off and then on again, the system retains the values of the chase the lights program and will re-run again.

Leading Edge Computersby billdeg Total messages in this thread: 1 ![]() This is the extremely rare 1982 Leading Edge MP-1673 L also known as the Model M ("M" because they used Mitsubishi parts). Click image for larger view.
Anyone have a 1982 Leading Edge Model M? "M" for Mitsubishi parts.
Not easy to find them. So I was wondering if there might be a 1982
Mitsubishi PC sold in Japan....?
There is the 1982 Mitsubishi Multi16 - a CP/M computer:(16 bit? but
it's not MS DOS)
https://www.reddit...i16_1982/
Mitsubishi could have put out
a PC of their own but they chose to partner with Leading Edge instead.
As many of you know the Japanese stayed with CP/M longer than the US.
Or maybe Mitsub. sold Leading Edge Model M's as "Mitsubishi" OEM in
Japan b">... [ read more ]

1961 Beckman DEXTIR Computerby billdeg Total messages in this thread: 2 Updated: [ Call from Beckman alumni ] 10/30/2024 ![]() Beckman Instruments, Inc. made a connected industrial research computer system called the DEXTIR, which was designed for to prepare data for computer entry. The model pictured in this photo was installed at the ESSO Research Labs in Baton Rouge, LA in July 1961. Click image for larger view.
Beckman issued a proposal to GM some time after the above photo was taken for an automatic monitoring and control system for the Die Casting Department of the Guide Lamp Division at General Motors. The comptuer that the DEXTIR would feed its data was (I believe) a UNIVAC 1108 computer from the same era. Perhaps also an IBM 704, 709, 7090) Download it here
