The directories 328NS and up have hand generated DESCRIPTIONS files (so are 50, 100-103) and generated index.html files. When this was no longer fun, the scripts described below were developed. The data is now combined with the script generated information (from md5Db.txt).

The directories 200 and up have generated DESCRIPTIONS and index.html files. The source for this is an md5sum based database which links file comments to hashes and names. Some Perl scripts are run in each directory to create the index.html files. Because the steps are small, so are the scripts. Below the perl scripts is also some unix/Linux functionality (md5sum, fgrep). These are the files:

The md5Db.txt comment column might grow as more files are inspected. The focus is on executables (*.COM and *.CMD), these are parsed with 'strings' and the useful bits will be the comment.

Useful command:

for FILE in *; do getComment ../md5Db.txt `md5sum -- $FILE | cut -c1-32`; done
using
function getComment(){ fgrep $2 $1 | cut -c 35- }
displays the files with the comment from the database. This helps in identifying the as-yet-uncommented files in a directory. The title of the page ('TITLE= ' line in the DESCRIPTIONS file) is copied by hand. It is used by the script generating the higher level DESCRIPTIONS file, so not purely decorative.

Adding a comment to the md5 database for all files in the current directory (useful for an incorrectly read disk):

for FILE in *; do perl ../addCommentMd5Db.pl $FILE "Corrupted" ../md5Db.txt; done

Command line to create the DESCRIPTIONS file at this level (archives/rlee/L/LOOSECPM):

find ./ -name DESCRIPTIONS -print | xargs fgrep "TITLE= " | sed -e 's/^\.\///' -e 's/\/DESCRIPTIONS:TITLE=/ /' | sort  > DESCRIPTIONS
